Tavira Day 1 - Touring Olhao

It was time to leave Lagos after a great ten day stay. We gathered out stuff and carried it down the three stories to the car and headed off to Tavira in the Eastern Algarve. We didn’t have to check in at our next place until 16:00 so we diverted to Olhao to spend some time wandering the town noted for its fishing heritage, a fabulous market and authentic aspects of Algarvarian life.

We parked near the waterfront and went exploring through the waterfront market. The outdoor market reminded me of a pop-up Florida flea market on steroids.

Lots of cheap junk and aggressive vendors. A few stalls with some reasonable clothes.

There were two indoor market buildings, one dedicated to seafood (smelly) and the other vegetables and meats.

From there we started wandering the alleys of the town. This was a lot of fun giving a good feeling for everyday life here.

There is a lot of street art/graffiti, some of it quite good and not distasteful.

The heart of the town is a rabbit warren of shops and cafes. A lot of them, good quality venues.

We loved the tile exteriors (again) and some of the patina of the buildings.

We encountered a wedding party at the central church and paused to wait for the bride to appear. A beautiful wedding party.

From here we drove to our destination in Cabanas de Tavira and arrived a bit early to meet the owner for check in so had to kill an hour in a seaside cafe for a well deserved cold beverage.

This is an interesting little seaside town with a boardwalk along the water’s edge. There is a barrier island of sand dunes and beach accessible by a short water taxi ride.

We got checked into our apartment at the appointed hour. The owner spoke very little English and we were a little skeptical that we were at the correct place but everything worked out. The view from our patio is fabulous although the apartment not as well equipped as the others we have rented. It’s clean and we are only here for three days so it should be OK. We just had to buy a few more essentials at the store then we are used to.

For supper we strolled down the boardwalk and ended up at a pizzeria that was highly rated on Trip Advisor.

We had some baked mushrooms and a pizza and went home satisfied and ready for bed.
