Sevilla Day 2 - Walking Tour

I was up well before sunrise at 7:50 getting charged up with some Nespresso for a day of walking around town. Sunrise is about 8:40 here so no hurry to get out and get going. We decided to do one of the "free" walking tours to get acquainted with the town as we have enjoyed similar ones in other cities. We started out with our guide at the Cathedral and enjoyed hearing the history of Sevilla as we visited several of the central points of interest.

About half way through, we started to get a bit bored and decided to break off and do our own thing. We walked around, taking in the sights for a while.

We stopped at a museum where they have all of the records, maps and journals from the early Spanish explorers trips to the new world. Quite an interesting collection!

We ended up in a nearby church and happened upon a Christening. It was just ending up and after, everyone seemed to exit to the plaza which was alive with locals having drinks and enjoying the afternoon.

Our primary objective for today was to visit the Cathedral d Sevilla. We got to the line up about 30 minutes before opening and enjoyed a relatively uncrowded opportunity to view the largest (by volume) Cathedral on earth.

The sheer size and opulence is overwhelming! It's hard to imagine that people and governments put such a large amount of their money and efforts into building and furnishing such a building in the earlier centuries.

We had the opportunity of seeing the tomb of Christopher Columbus.

The Cathedral has a tower (El Giraldillo) that was rebuilt from the original Moorish one that you can climb via a series of 40 ramps inside. This provided a great overview of the city.

We wandered several more alleys and found a nice bodega to grab a cold drink and rest our feet for a while.

We did a bit more roaming then returned to the apartment prior to heading out to another Tapas restaurant for supper. I don't think I would be driving my Aston Martin down that street!

After supper, we did a bit more walking of the streets and alleys. It was remarkable how vibrant the city is at night.

We came upon this interesting structure, the Metropol Parasol. It looks totally out of place in the old city!
