We decided to do a slight detour and see the town of Olvera where some friends had spent some time a few winters ago. The town surrounds a 12th Century Aribic castle perched high on a craggy rock.
This is a white town (colour of the houses, not the people) with a lovely main street.
The walk to the castle was definitely and uphill climb but you were rewarded with great views of the town and surrounding countryside covered in olive groves.
Next to the castle is a 19th century neoclassical church built over the ruins of an earlier one.
From here, we drove to Sevilla, a metropolis of over a million people with a dense central historic area which is where we are staying. Not very car friendly! Luckily our GPS took us through the maze of narrow one-way cobbled streets and squares to a central parking garage. Hopefully we can find it again to retrieve the car in a few days.
From there it was a 10 minute walk with luggage to our apartment. Again a maze of streets which we mastered with Google maps on the phone. We were met by the property manager and found that we had rented an apartment that is part of an 18th Century Spanish Mansion right in the heart of town. This building is huge and has been converted from one house to 45 apartments. Very modern inside our one bedroom unit with all of the conveniences and right in the heart of the tourist district.
A quick trip to the grocery store and we were ready to go exploring and get our bearings. So many people out walking, eating and drinking. Just amazing! This is just a typical little square that is right outside our door.
We walked by the Cathedral and just happened to encounter another wedding in progress!
We were hungry and stopped at a Tapas Bar recommended by the property manager. Great food again, good thing the portions are small.
From here we struck out on a evening walk to the waterfront.
No tables left in the restaurants by 9:00 pm.
Lots to see over the next two days....
